Annual Membership Meeting and Fall Conference

Stephen Beeson, M.D., will keynote Hospital Council's Fall Conference and, in addition, will give an interactive presentation at the morning's CEO Breakfast and Annual Membership meeting. He will also facilitate a discussion at a special lunch for chief medical officers. The event will be held on Friday, September 30, 2011 at the Pittsburgh Mariott North. Invitations for the day's events will be sent next week to Hospital Council members.

Dr. Beeson works with the Studer Group and is a family medicine physician with Sharp Rees-Stealy Medical Group. In 2007, Sharp HealthCare was the recipient of the prestigious Baldrige Award for organization performance. In addition to his medical practice, Dr. Beeson is an author as well as a widely-requested speaker.

Hospital Council member chief executive officers and members of the Board of Directors will be invited to join Dr. Beeson for breakfast beginning at 7:30 a.m. Dr. Beeson will lead the group in an interactive, high-level discussion on physician-hospital integration.

His presentation to all of the conference participants will be The Journey of Transformation and Improvement, and will be a multi-media presentation with practical "how to" tips and tools on improving quality within an organization based on the journey of Sharp-Rees to qualify and then receive the Baldrige Award.

In addition, Hospital Council member chief medical officers will be invited to join Dr. Beeson for a special lunch. He will facilitate a discussion with CMOs on their current challenges.

The conference will also feature presentations by Maulik Joshi, Ph.D., senior vice president for Research for the American Hospital Association and President of the Health Research and Educational Trust, and Joe Martin, executive director of the Pennsylvania Health Care Cost Containment Council.

Following the presentations, all participants are invited to stay for a networking luncheon. Annual Medicare and Medicaid Update

Hospital Council and the western Pennsylvania chapter of HFMA have partnered to bring this year's Annual Medicare and Medicaid Update to Hospital Council and HFMA members. The program will be held on September 16, 2011 at  Hospital Council's Education Center.

Mark Spehar, manager of the Health Sciences and Government Practice for Deloitte and Touche LLP and president of the western Pennsylvania chapter of HFMA, will open the conference. Keynoting the event is Larry Goldberg, president of Larry Goldberg Consulting. He will provide an overview of current Medicare issues and the latest updates on health reform. Following his remarks, Highmark's Medicare Services Provider Audit Team will provide an update and answer questions.

The afternoon will kick off with a presentation on the Medicare Cost Report Form and Reimbursement Strategies by Julie DiFranceso, director, Health Sciences and Government for Deloitte and Touche. Andrew Williams, CPA and manager of BKD, will conclude the day with a Rural Update.

CNO Committee

Northwest Regional Quality/Risk/ Patient Safety Committee

The Northwest Regional Quality/Risk Patient Safety Committee will meet on September 15, 2011 at Brookville Hospital in Brookville, Pennsylvania. Brad VanSickles, vice president of Operations and Patient Safety at Grove City Medical Center will discuss the hospital's Community Service Health Integration program, a collaborative with nursing homes.The collaborative also includes home health agencies and pharmacies and is designed to reduce nursing home readmissions. Summaries of Recent HCWP Meetings

Community Needs Assessment Steering Committee

Hospital Council held its first meeting of the Community Needs Assessment Steering Committee via audioconference on July 6, 2011. The Committee discussed several items including data collection, the use of vendors and consultants, the timing of assessments and other topics. The Steering Committee will hold a meeting in Fall 2011.
